Synopsis
From a distance, the Sierra Nevada are among the most picturesque mountains in the country. However, the heavy snowfall that makes for breathtaking vistas has produced heartbreaking tragedies. The program chronicles the ill-fated Donner Party of 1846; the January 1952 avalanche that trapped a train and its 226 passengers in a blizzard; and the March 31, 1982 avalanche that trapped a 22-year-old ski resort worker for five days.
