Synopsis
A mother struggles to come to terms with her teenage daughter's announcement that she is a lesbian.Jane, the daughter of protective parents, Janice and Robert, is a high school freshman with plenty of friends. A new girl, Taylor, arrives a school and quickly befriends Jane. The two become inseparable, and Jane begins to lose contact with her other friends. As Jane and Taylor grow closer, their friendship is soon elevated to a new level; one night, they kiss. Jane begins to accept what happened and realizes she wants to be with Taylor. Brad, Jane's younger brother, see Jane and Taylor kissing. Rumors about Jane and Taylor begin to circulate all over the school, leaving the girls isolated at school. When confronted by her parents, Jane denies the rumors. With the increasing pressures at school and home, Jane finally tells her family the truth. Her shocked parents, refusing to accept the news, ground Jane and forbidden her to see Taylor, who breaks off the relationship. Jane's English teacher, Ms. Walcott, consoles the teenager after Jane informs her about what she has been going through. Ms. Walcott tells Jane that she is also a lesbian. In yet another discussion with her parents, Jane unintentionally lets it slip that Ms. Walcott is gay. Janice confronts the teacher and threatens to expose her to the school board. After a series of events (sneaking out, attacking her brother, fighting with a schoolmate), Jane's parents decide to send Jane to boarding school. Jane ends up at Ms. Walcott's house, scared and confused. The teacher then appears at Jane's house, confronting her parents about their daughter's anguish and warning them they will lose their daughter forever unless they try to be more understanding. Janice and Robert try to understand what their daughter is experiencing and begin to build new relationships with her. Janice even begins attending PFLAG, a support group for parents of gay children, and is ultimately able to accept the person Jane has become, regardless of who and how she chooses to love.
