Synopsis

Telefilm based on writer/director Rod Serling's "Playhouse 90" script, "This Town Has Turned to Dust," a morality play about bigotry and mob psychology. Set hundreds of years in the future when the rest of the Earth's inhabitants have relocated to the asteroid New Angeles, a group of miners, called Dwellers, and Native Americans, called Drivers, live in the Utah desert in the midst of a nine-month drought. When local businessman Jerry Paul learns of his wife's close friendship with a young Driver named Tommy, Jerry falsely claims that Tommy raped his wife. A mob of vigilante Dwellers murders Tommy as the local sheriff, Harvey Denton, chooses to look the other way. In a crisis of conscience, the sheriff must decide whether or not to confront Jerry, his old friend, to restore justice. Meanwhile, a traveling space journalist from New Angeles, Hannify, witnesses the events and decides to cover the story. In a classic shoot-out scene, Denton faces his old friend Jerry.
