Led by an African named Cinque, the slaves revolted against the ship's crew, sparing only two Spaniards to navigate the ship. The "Amistad" anchored off the coast of Long Island, New York, where the Africans took their case to the U.S. Courts. Defended by former President John Quincy Adams, the slaves won their freedom by a U.S. Supreme Court decision in 1841.
