Synopsis

In 1979, police discovered the bodies of Suzanne Jacobs and her three-year-old son in their East San Diego home. Homicide detectives found several strands of hair clutched in the woman's hand, bloody footprints and a bloody note with the words "Love Insurance" written on it. Without the forensic techniques and equipment that exist today, police had little to go on. Years later, police arrested Johnny Massingale for the crime and got his confession on tape. But while Massingale was in prison, a rash of slashing murders plagued San Diego. With new criminal profiling, forensic detective work and blood, dental and hair analysis, police realized that Massingale was innocent of the crimes and that the serial killer they were looking for had been claiming victims for years.
