Synopsis
Obesity is a global epidemic, with the United States leading the list as the nation with the heaviest per capita population in the world. Health problems caused by obesity kill more than half a million Americans per year, and it's not only an adult disease -- 25 percent of all children in the U.S. are considered obese. The program introduces viewers to two adults and several children who are struggling with their weight, as they discuss factors that contribute to their obesity, and how it impacts their social and physical lives. From gastric bypass surgery to intensive nutrition and exercise programs, the program chronicles their individual attempts to change their attitudes about food, exercise and themselves. Psychologists, nutritionists, physicians, fitness experts and obesity advocates discuss the cultural, emotional and sometimes genetic causes of obesity in our society, and the various options for losing weight and making positive lifestyle changes.
