Synopsis
The U.S.S. Greenville tragedy and the bombing of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese are two very different events, almost 60 years apart, that took place in the same Hawaiian waters. Both demonstrate the tragic meeting of men and women from two different world powers in an island paradise. On December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor was the site of a tragic event that changed the course of World War II. Naval forces of Imperial Japan made a surprise attack on the U.S. Pacific fleet. Twenty-two ships were hit; 165 planes destroyed; more than 2300 people killed. The program features never-before-seen footage of the U.S.S. Arizona; interviews with veterans who were there; and the Reconciliation Ceremony where American and Japanese veterans meet at peace. Also featured is an interview with Captain Scott Waddle, former commander of the U.S.S. Greenville. Just two months after the interview, the Greenville collided with a Japanese fishing ship, killing nine people on February 9, 2001.
