Synopsis

A Korean orphan, who was adopted as a baby by an American midwestern family, begins to wonder about his roots and his birth family. In 1995, when Nathan Adolfson graduated from college, instead of grappling with finding a job, he headed to Korea as a foreign exchange student. Armed with his Hi-8 Camera and a handful of Korean words he learned from a travel book, Adolfson traveled to Korea seeking new adventures. Born in Inchon, Korea, as Chai Chee Man, Nathan was adopted by Brook and Kathy Adolfson of Coon Rapids, Minnesota. Adolfson is one of the estimated 100,000 to 150,000 Korean-American adoptees living in the United States. Adolfson studies at Yonsei University in Seoul for six months, where he finds he doesn't fit in with the American students or the natives. Adolfson changes universities, moves into a boarding house, teaches English and volunteers to work at an orphanage. Eight months into his stay, Nathan's parents receive a letter from the adoption agency. A Korean family is inquiring as to the whereabouts of Chai Chee Man.
