Synopsis

Documentary special that reopens criminal investigations that remain unsolved. Part 1 examines the mystery of Dutch Schultz, a 1920s New York mobster who buried more than $50 million worth of cash, gold, jewels and liberty bonds in Phoenicia, New York, before a tax indictment trial. One week after he was acquitted, Schultz was killed along with his bodyguard, the only other person who knew the location of the buried treasure. Part 2 tells the story of billionaire socialite Carolyn Skelly. Between 1977 and 1991, more than $20 million worth of rare jewels were stolen from Skelly. There is a $1 million reward for their return. Another unexplained case is that of the 1998 murders of Mickey Thompson, aka "Mr. Speed," and his wife Trudy. Thompson participated in over 10,000 auto races and was the first American to unofficially break the 400-mph speed barrier. While preparing to leave their home, the Thompsons were killed by two intruders who entered their property.
