Synopsis

Documentary that explores the mystery of the West Nile Virus, an ancient disease of the Old World, and its unexpected emergence in the United States. During the summer of 1999, people were suffering from heat exhaustion; several Long Island residents came down with malaria; birds were dropping dead; horses were dying from undiagnosed paralysis and seizures; and hospitals were admitting patients with combinations of fever, vomiting, headache, memory loss and muscle weakness. The medical community was dumbfounded. Physicians, veterinarians and scientists were determined to solve the mystery of this illness. Sixty people infected by this unknown virus were under care in New York hospitals; seven were dead.
