Synopsis

Documentary about lying, from how and why people lie, to the detection of deception. Part 1, "Telling Lies," exposes the basics of lying, good and bad. The program opens with the story of Susan Smith, the South Carolina woman who in 1994 pushed a car with her two little boys into a lake and then lied about it -- but not well enough. Smith was trapped because her lies changed over time and were too far from the truth. Social scientists and undercover cops explain how professional liars avoid detection. Part 2, "Detecting Lies," opens with New Jersey private detective Anthony De Lorenzo, who literally wrote the book on telltale signs of marital cheating. De Lorenzo offers practical tips while asserting that amateurs can't tell from demeanor whether someone is lying . Psychologists back him up, pointing out that there is no universal specific sign of deception.
