Synopsis

Documentary that follows the rescue of a P-38 plane, one of a squadron of six P-38s buried in the glacial ice of Greenland since World War II. On July 15, 1942, storm clouds forced an American squadron en route to Great Britain to make emergency landings on a Greenland glacier. The crew radioed an SOS for three days before their signal was picked up by an American weather station. Ten days after their landing, a rescue team on dog sled arrived and the men walked 17 miles to a Coast Guard cutter on the Greenland shore. Includes interviews with the former pilots who survived the mission, archival P-38 fighter plane footage, home video taken at the recovery site and photographs of the pilots at the site in 1942.
