Synopsis

One of the world's most notorious eruptions occurred in 79 AD when Mount Vesuvius wiped out one of the ancient world's most famous cities: Pompeii. The program tells the story of Pompeii's elegant neighbor, Herculaneum, the playground of the Roman aristocracy and the elite, replete with luxury homes, magnificent arcades, Roman baths and one of the most famous libraries of the Roman age, the Villa of Papyri. Together with a small select team, Professor Marcello Gigante of Naples University has embarked upon a excavation of Herculaneum. Covered for almost two millennia, access to the Villa of Papyri has resulted in the recovery of several hundred Greek scrolls -- each providing insight into the late Roman age and the evolution of Hellenistic thought.
