Synopsis

Documentary contrasting two starkly different ways of dealing with violent criminals. Moving back and forth between the "Supermax" Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown, Ohio, and the "RSVP" -- Resolve to Stop the Violence Project -- program in the San Francisco County Jail, the documentary lets hardened prisoners talk about the stresses and goals of their incarceration. The Supermax prison has computer-controlled security, 23-hour-a-day solitary confinement with limited phone calls and visits from families. The experimental RSVP program puts more then 60 men together in a dormitory setting as they await sentencing, immersing them in 12 hours of group therapy a day. They can see their families twice a week and make daily phone calls, but they must participate in a kind of talking cure for violence.
