Lurking in the depths of Kaikoura Canyon off the coast of New Zealand's South Island, the creature, which can grow up to 60 feet in length, has never been seen in its natural habitat or photographed on film. Dr. Roper, of the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, leads a team of experts from New Zealand's National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA), NASA, Cornell University and Whale Watch Kaikoura.
