Synopsis

Documentary about the "Prairie School" and their self-proclaimed leader Frank Lloyd Wright. Around the turn of the last century, at the height of the industrial revolution, an influential, forward-looking architectural movement developed in the Midwest -- the Prairie School. Prairie School buildings were distinguished by their use of simple, natural materials like brick, stucco and stained wood arranged with an emphasis on the horizontal line. Unadorned walls were punctuated by continuos bands of art-glass windows and capped by broad overhanging roofs. Inside, an open floor plan centered around a substantial fireplace, creating a kind of modern interpretation of the farmhouse. Wright's self-proclaimed mission "was to create an American architecture -- one that did not look to other places and other times for its aesthetics."
