Synopsis

The Belgian inventor, industrialist and activist Leo "Doc" Baekelan was the creator of the first truly synthetic plastic -- Bakelite. Moving from the birth of plastic to the nylon-stocking riots of World War II, to the proliferation of Tupperware in the 1950s, and the current use of platic in everything from phones to PCs, the program shows how plastic has figured in everything from condoms to consumer goods, from artificial hearts to the atomic bomb.
