Synopsis

Adaptation of William Inge's play about a drifter who shakes up a small Midwestern town when he falls for his old friend's fiancee. Hal arrives in Elgin, Kansas, looking for his college chum, Alan Benson, a wealthy young man whom he plans to ask for a job. Currently a drifter with no money, Hal connects with Millie, the outspoken sister of the town beauty, Madge Owens. Madge is about to be engaged to Alan at the annual town celebration taking place that very night. Madge has been named Neewollah Queen, an honor previously bestowed on her mother, Flo, and will be crowned at the festival, which culminates in a picnic. Hal attends the event and is drawn to Madge. Sparks fly, and they leave the picnic in the car Alan lent Hal. A jealous Alan accuses Hal of stealing his car and his girlfriend and resentment that dates back to their college days resurfaces. Hal leaves town to escape the police, while Madge confronts her feelings for both men, decides to change her destiny and follow her heart.
