Synopsis
A look at the case of the murders of Colette MacDonald and her two young children on February 17, 1970. Murdered in their home at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Colette's husband, Dr. Jeffrey MacDonald, a physician and member of the elite Green Berets, was also in the house and was beaten, knocked unconscious and suffered a punctured lung. Though he claimed his innocence, MacDonald was charged by the Army with three counts of murder. He was acquitted and honorably discharged but in 1974 a civilian grand jury was convened to hear the charges. The case went to trial in 1979 after several appeals and two trips before the Supreme Court. The jury found MacDonald guilty and he was sentenced to three consecutive life terms in prison. In the 1980s, the defense team got access to crucial evidence and are now awaiting DNA testing as they put together another round of appeals.
