Synopsis
The story behind Mt. Rushmore, the world's largest man-made monument. Construction began on the project in 1927 as an effort to boost state tourism, although the sculptures were originally supposed to be historical figures from the west, such as Lewis and Clark, Buffalo Bill Cody, Sioux Chief Red Cloud and John C. Fremont. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum agreed to do it, but wanted to portray Presidents Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson and Roosevelt, which caused a scandal. Borglum and 400 men started carving the 60-foot busts during the unbridled prosperity of the 1920s and continued working on it for 14 years, well into the Great Depression.
