Synopsis

In August and November 1999, two earthquakes devastated Turkey. Together, the quakes killed between 30,000 and 40,000 people, placing them among the most deadly earthquake events of this century. The program features interviews with victims, survivors and rescuers as they explain what happened during and after the earthquake. Since 1939, there has been a steady procession of earthquakes on the North Anatolian fault line heading toward Istanbul, almost like a row of falling dominos. After plotting these events, geologists suspected that Izmit would be the epicenter of the next big quake, but they had no idea of the magnitude of the devastation.
