Synopsis

On May 29, 1944, an American B-17 bomber on a reconnaissance mission from England developed engine trouble and crashed into the sea off the West coast of Ireland. Eight Americans survived the watery landing of the plane called Badger Beauty. The survivors were smuggled to safety by local villagers -- in direct violation of Ireland's neutrality. Ultimately, the survivors returned to England to join the invasion of Europe. More than 50 years later, 10-year-old Nicholas Swerdloe -- curious about his grandfather, the navigator of Badger Beauty -- travels to Ireland with his father Allen. They meet the plane's original co-pilot -- octogenarian Larry Ketterer -- and together retrace the footsteps of the Badger Beauty survivors. During their stay, the three meet the family of Tom Kennedy, one of the fisherman who rescued four of the survivors.
