Synopsis
Draws on the 600 hours of Oval Office phone recordings released by President Lyndon Johnson's heirs to focus on the political triangle of LBJ, FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover and civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Utilizes the taped conversations, internal FBI and White House documents, on-camera interviews, witness accounts and archival news footage to reveal how Hoover and the FBI attempted to discredit King through its knowledge of his private indiscretions, and even to encourage him to kill himself, by means of a campaign of surveillance, wiretaps and persecution. Hoover's persistent efforts to destroy King occurred alongside LBJ's forceful supports for Dr. King himself, and Civil Rights legislation.
