Synopsis
Profile of musicians Gloria and Emilio Estefan. Born Gloria Maria Fajardo in 1957, Gloria left Cuba with her parents after Castro took power. Her father fought in the Bay of Pigs and served in Vietnam, but he developed multiple sclerosis and became bedridden. Gloria grew up taking care of him and her younger sister while her mother worked. Gloria was 17 when she met Emilio Estefan, an industrious 23-year-old Cuban refugee. He had become director of Latin marketing for Bacardi Imports while moonlighting as a musician. At a big Cuban wedding, Emilio asked Gloria to join the band on stage. She sang and received a standing ovation. A few weeks later, she joined Emilio's Miami Sound Machine, which became the hottest party band in Miami. The couple married in 1978.
