Synopsis

Documentary that tells the story of one of World War II's most brutal battles by revealing the story behind two photographs of flag-raisings on Iwo Jima that were taken in the midst of the fighting. One of the photographs, the image of six American Marines raising the flag atop Mt. Suribachi, became the most famous and most reproduced picture in our history. The moment was captured by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal. Three of the flag raisers did not survive Iwo Jima. The lesser-known photograph was that of Marine Corps photographer Lou Lowery, taken hours earlier. The program tells the story through letters, interviews and recollections of the men who conquered Mt. Suribachi.
