Synopsis

A ballet by choreographer Jerome Robbins, from a violin concerto by German composer Alban Berg, about a young woman about a young woman facing death. The music conjures imagery associated with death so strongly that Robbins' male character is actually death personified. Berg wrote the piece in the last year of his life (1935) when he was ill and threatened with arrest by the Nazis. The program includes an interview with the choreographer in which he discusses Berg's music and his professional relationship with George Balanchine, the co-founder of the New York City Ballet, of which Robbins is co-ballet master.
