Synopsis
Documentary follows the very different stories of heart surgery for two girls -- Samantha Summers of Boston and Lyuda Sudilovskaya of Novosibirsk, Siberia. The American girl had heart surgery using a heart-lung machine, which keeps a patient alive by circulating blood through the body while the heart is being operated on. The Russian operation involves the controversial use of hypothermia, whereby the patient is cooled to the point of death in order to decrease the rate of metabolism, reducing the body's need for oxygen and helping to prevent brain damage during the operation.
