In August 1998, two car bombs exploded simultaneously at United States embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, killing 268 people and injuring more than 5000. In the days and weeks that followed, American investigators closed in on the suspected mastermind of the bombings, Osama bin Laden, a Muslim fundamentalist leader. More than a year earlier, the U.S. government had indications that bin Laden was operating a terrorist cell in Kenya.
