Synopsis

Documentary that examines the role that literacy has played in the development of African-American culture over the last two centuries. The program uses the Givens Collection of African American Literature, a collection of books and manuscripts housed at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, as a starting point. The Givens Collection includes more than 6000 items by and about African Americans, including an original first edition of the first book published by an African American, Phyllis Wheatley's Poems (1773). The Givens Foundation, which oversees the collection, was established by Archie Givens Sr (1919-74), an African-American entrepreneur who emphasized education.
