Synopsis

Jacob, a young Norwegian seaman who has written a novel, comes home to Oslo after years at sea but refuses to see his ailing father because he blames him for his mother's insanity. He falls in love with Line, an uninhibited girl who runs around with a wild crowd, and they begin living together and enjoying a carefree way of life. At a party, Jacob is humiliated by Laffen, a writer friend of Jacob's and Line's former lover, and challenges him to a fight. Laffen adds to Jacob's humiliation by beating him soundly. Line later informs Jacob that she thinks she is pregnant, and they argue about an abortion. Jacob becomes increasingly jealous of Line's attention to others and, on a yachting holiday, his jealousy reaches such an exaggerated state that he almost kills her. Realizing that he is no better than his father, Jacob finally visits him before going back to sea. He indicates to Line that he may return to her.
