Synopsis
As one of the most primitive and endangered animals on Earth, the Sumatran rhino is so rare and secretive that it has never been filmed in the wild -- until now. Fewer than 500 remain in dense patches of rain forest in Indonesia and Malaysia, It is the only Asian rhino with two horns, making it a favorite target of poachers who sell the horns for use in traditional medicines. The Sumatran rhino is linked to the wooly rhino that inhabited Eurasia during the Ice Ages. It is so enigmatic that up until 20 years ago, few natives living near its jungle habitat were aware of the Sumatran rhino's existence. Shot on location in the Indonesian jungle, the program documents previous efforts to save Sumatran rhinos, as well as current ones, such as the electrified fenced-in sanctuary where scientists now hope to breed Sumatran rhinos in the wild, and the Cincinnati Zoo, where biologists are close to becoming the first in over 100 years to breed a Sumatran rhino in captivity.
