Synopsis

Photojournalist David Adams heads for Niger to cross the Sahara the old way -- on foot in the company of the legendary "blue men of the desert," the Tuareg cameleers who for thousands of years have guided their camel caravans along the trade routes that criss-cross their way through the shifting, burning sands of North Africa. Adams meets these proud descendants of desert pirates and enlists their help in his journey across the desert. Assembling a crew of Tuaregs, he sets off on an adventure by jeep and camel train across a stretch of desert as wide as France, with sand dunes as large as 30 feet high and 20 miles long. The danger of the desert comes into sharp focus when traveling on an ocean of sand. Days away from the nearest medical facility, there's no margin for error. The crew must be prepared for anything, including scorpions, disease-carrying mosquitoes, and even kidnappers.
