Synopsis

Documentary that examines the trials of 44-year-old Tom Bonney of Chesapeake, Virginia, accused of murdering his 19-year-old daughter, Kathy Bonney. On November 22, 1987, a motorist spotted a nude body on the edge of a canal bank. It was Kathy Bonney and she had been shot 27 times. Her father, Tom, had reported her missing several hours earlier. Police suspicions quickly turned to him. In the first trial, Bonney pleaded guilty by reason of insanity, arguing multiple personality disorder -- a highly controversial diagnosis. The jury found him guilty of first degree murder and sentenced him to death. The sentence was overturned on appeal. After the second trial, Bonney was declared incompetent. The judge delayed re-sentencing until Bonney was found competent to stand trial. He is now in a maximum-security prison in Raleigh, North Carolina, and, more than a decade later, he has yet to be sentenced.
