Synopsis
Documentary that celebrates musical performances by black artists captured on film from the 1920's to the present. Segmented into six thematic categories: The Dancers, The Divas, Rock and Soul, The Male Singers, Jazz and Swing, and Hip-Hop. Each segment features film footage and interviews with celebrities relevant to that category. The program chronicles American music and dance from Bessie Smith singing in "St. Louis Blues," to Whitney Houston in "The Bodyguard." Also features footage of guitarist Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock; Prince in his film "Purple Rain"; Sammy Davis Jr. in "Save the Children"; the lyrics of Notorious B.I.G. in "The Show"; the dance styles of the Nicholas Brothers in "Stormy Weather"; and Savion Glover in "Tap." Interviewees talk about their favorite performers, songs and moments in film and musical history that inspired them to pursue their dreams in the entertainment business.
