Synopsis
Documentary chronicling the evolution of computer mainframes from the earliers computer prototypes of the 19th century to the world's most powerful supercomputer today. Traces the evolution of miniaturization, begun in 1947 with the invention of the transistor, to the integrated circuit in 1959, to the invention of the microprocessor in the late 1960s, shrinking computers that previously required an entire room onto a chip. Traces the story behind the development of the first practical, affordable personal computers -- the Apple II in 1977. The documentary also projects how computers may change our lives in the 21st century. Experiments are being done on molecular computers that could store all of the information in the Library of Congress on a chip the size of a fingernail. Advances in artificial intelligence could even make machines think more like humans.
