Synopsis

Elephant kingdoms are ruled by matriarchs -- mature females who lead their family herds through the complexities of a changing world. Matriarchs hold the cultural keys of their species, teaching their followers to find food and water in times of drought, and in times of plenty, teaching young mothers how to rear their first calves. Less social, the adult males wander alone, or with a close companion, only joining with females to mate. But they, too, have a role in elephant society -- they teach the young adolescent males how to navigate the hierarchical world of the mature bull.
