Synopsis
Tells the story of an encounter with a young person that influences the work of Thomas Edison. In 1931 New York, an adult Jack Maloney reflects on his boyhood friendship and apprenticeship with inventor Thomas Edison. They meet when young orphan Jack chooses Edison's workshop to hide from the police and the orphanage director after trying to sell stolen newspapers. Edison sides with the boy and takes him on as his apprentice, providng the youngster "quality time" with an adult for the first time in his life. Jack goes on to participate in the creation of the first motion pictures with Edison's kinetoscope. However, Edison's workaholic perfectionism has come at the expense of his family life. When Jack voices his wish for a family, Edison encourages him to apprentice his freedom -- freedom from responsibilty and freedom to think and work. Later in his life, Edison finally realizes, through Jack, just how important family really is.
