The film, by noted documentarian Perry Miller Adato, focuses on the work and early years of the renowned American poet, biographer, and historian, Carl Sandburg. A variety of materials and techniques, both documentary and dramatic, are woven together to create the portrait of Sandburg, and the last half-hour consists of excerpts from "An Evening With Carl Sandburg -- Poems, Songs and Stories by America's Poet-Troubador," John Cullum's one-man show taped before a live audience at Bryn Mawr College.
