Synopsis

The program voyages to the Andes in Peru to witness the search for the thousand-year-old mummies of an obscure Andean culture in Peru called the Chachapoya. Part 1 investigates the mysterious culture and follows three climbers on their quest to find unlooted Chachapoyan tombs. The Chachapoya, who thrived between 700-1500 AD, revered their ancestors and believed they possessed eternal life. They mummified their corpses and placed them in tombs that were constructed on high cliffs. Part 2 tells the story of the scientific analyses of the mummies and witnesses the excavation of the tomb by Peruvian archaeologists. After comprehensive radiocarbon dating and DNA testing, it is discovered that the mummy DNA matches one of the people in the village nearby.
