Synopsis

Questions concerning the media's role in the 1984 presidential election are presented by WTTW/Chicago's John Callaway to a group of leading broadcast journalists, scholars, network executives, and campaign managers. Special attention is given to the practice of early reporting of election results and its effect on voters (as was illustrated in the election of 1980, when Ronald Reagan was projected as the winner hours before the polls closed on the west coast), as well as other, less apparent ways that the electorate is influenced and manipulated. The titles for each part of the series, videotaped at a conference held at the University of Chicago's William Benton Fellowship program in broadcast journalism, are: "The General Election Campaign," "The Primaries," and "Debates and Political Advertising."
