Synopsis

From the Gobi to the Sahara, a full one third of the Earth's surface is covered in deserts and arid lands. The program examines the bitter wastelands to discover how a place of death is, in fact, alive. In the Namibia desert, a herd of elephants makes a spectacle across a sprawling stretch of sand dunes. Suddenly, with consensus, they begin to search for water with their trunks. This herd possesses a surprising skill for such large animals -- they can sniff out water trapped under the sand. The program also features stories of adaptation such as rodents that live their entire lives without taking a drink of water and plants whose seeds can endure fifty years of drought.
