Synopsis
When the Seattle King Dome needed to be torn down to make way for a new stadium, the job went to the Loiseaux family and their company Controlled Demolition Inc. The King Dome would be the largest domed, standing 300 feet high and 600 feet across, structure ever to be explosively demolished. In order to bring down the dome safely, Loiseaux decided to have 30 people place explosives at key load bearing points, as well as on the inside of the dome up to 200 feet in the air. Timing the explosions and the rate of collapse was key to minimizing the impact on nearby structures. Since the dome sits on a slurry in-fill of land instead of solid dirt and rock, the impact of the structure hitting the ground could cause serious tremors that could damage adjacent railway tracks, highways and buildings as much as half a mile away. Camera crews follow the crew through the planning, and set up remote-operated equipment to film inside of the stadium during the demolition.
