Synopsis

The pilot film for the series "Flash Gordon." The pilot film precedes the series in story chronology: In 1939 in Warsaw, Poland, Olympic gold medalist Flash Gordon receives a cryptic one word message -- "Mongo" -- from a dying scientist with instructions to seek out Dr. Hans Zarkov, a brilliant scientist. While enroute, Flash meets and befriends Dale Arden, a reporter seeking Zarkov for an interview. Suddenly, the plane on which they are traveling is bombarded by meteors from an unknown source. With only one parachute between them, Flash and Dale jump and are rescued by the man they both seek -- Dr. Zarkov. When Flash tells Zarkov about "Mongo," he learns its meaning: Mongo is a warring planet moving closer to Earth and threatening to destroy it. When Zarkov tells Flash and Dale that he is planing to travel to Mongo to stop its leader, Ming the Merciless, from destroying Earth, both Flash and Dale agree to accompany him. The pilot depicts the trio's encounter with Ming and their attempts to overthrow him and stop his conquest of the Earth. Billed as "The first full-length adult animated space fantasy ever produced for television." Filmed in 1979.
