Synopsis

Biopic of Cuba's Fidel Castro, beginning with Castro's childhood when he and his brother Raul are influenced by the stories of Jose Marti, the revolutionary who helped to liberate Cuba from Spain in the late 1800s. As students, they join the opposition party and later establish a band of rebels whose early coup attempts fail. During Castro's self-imposed exile in Mexico, he meets Che Guevara, who later becomes his comrade in the guerilla movement. On July 26, 1959, Fidel Castro, Che Guevara and over 100 men set sail for Cuba and the revolution begins.

Castro and the rebels advance slowly against the regime of General Batista. He receives increasing worldwide notoriety and support from the Cuban populace. The U.S. ambassador and the CIA inform Batista that they can no longer support his regime. Eventually, a victorious Castro arrives in Havana and declares to a massive crowd that the revolution will continue against corruption, illiteracy, disease, hunger and exploitation. Castro and his advisors form a new government; he meets secretly with representatives of the Communist party to turn Cuba into a Marxist-Leninist society. As relations with the United States deteriorate, the people of Cuba grow disenchanted with the failing economy. His friend, Che Guevera denounces the Soviets and is killed while leading a revolutionary effort in Bolivia. By 1980, Castro continues to live the dream of his revolution, while many of his people are getting frustrated.
