Synopsis

A look at how The Fanny Farmer Cookbook maintained its special status -- both at the beginning and end of the 20th century -- for millions of home cooks who counted on it for recipes and advice. Host Amy Coleman is joined in the kitchen by Marion Cunningham, a cookbook author and food writer who has revised, rewritten and updated The Fanny Farmer Cookbook for the last 25 years. Coleman and Cunningham prepare a typical meal from the first cookbook, published in 1896 -- lima bean soup, roast duck, rice croquettes, mashed sweet potatoes and Indian pudding. Then, they prepare a contemporary meal of crab cakes; corn chowder; capellini with shrimp, lemon and parsley; and lemon meringue pie. The program also visits with Barbara Haber, food historian and curator of Harvard's Schlesinger Library.
