Synopsis
The Bonneville Salt Flats have been the spiritual home of land speed racing since the 1930s. In 1991, driver Al Teague became the world record holder for wheel-driven cars. Now, at the 1999 World Speed Finals, Teague returns to defend his title. The new contender is speed legend Don Vesco. For 11 years, Vesco has been working on his turbine-powered supercar, the Turbinator, and viewers are there when the drama unfolds as Vesco tries to wrestle the record from Teague. The program also includes interviews with Craig Breedlove and Art Arfons, who relive their near-fatal crashes during their head-to-head duel in the 1960s. Richard Noble describes the design innovations in Thrust SSC and introduces viewers to the fastest car in the world. Andy Green, the fastest man on land, gives his personal account of breaking the sound barrier.
