Synopsis

On the morning of June 8, 1924, George Mallory and Andrew Irvine started up the final slopes of Mount Everest with a good chance of being the first ever to climb the world's tallest mountain. Shortly after midday, they were spotted less than 1000 feet from the top. Then the clouds rolled in and they were never seen again. This 1986 documentary explores their legendary effort and the enduring mystery of whether the two made it to the summit. The program features 1986 interviews with the then two surviving members of the 1924 expedition: Professor Noel Odell and Captain John Noel. Odell was climbing in support of the summit team and was the last person to see Mallory and Irvine alive; Noel was expedition photographer.
