Synopsis
The Boston Central Artery/Tunnel Project is the largest and most complex highway project in U.S. history. Larger than the Panama Canal or the Alaskan pipeline and more expensive, the Big Dig will cost more than $10 billion by the time it is completed in 2004. Unlike the canal or the pipeline, this project is taking place in the middle of a city with more than 200,000 drivers daily, as well as AMTRAK trains. Boston's Big Dig is a technological wonder that will include a 270-foot cable-stayed bridge, the 21st century's answer to the Golden Gate Bridge -- and the only one of its kind.
