Recently retired, Agent Ethan Hunt lives a slower-paced life training new IMF agents. With this change, new opportunities enter his life, including a possible marriage to his girlfriend Julia. Sequel to "Mission: Impossible" (USA/1995), directed by Brian De Palma and starring Tom Cruise.

Scarlett Johansson, Carrie-Anne Moss, Kenneth Branagh, and director Joe Carnahan were all previously attached but left the project when Cruise pushed filming back a year to accommodate the fast-track production of Steven Spielberg's "The War of the Worlds."

Ang Lee, Oliver Stone, Brett Ratner, Gary Fleder, Tom Tykwer, Frank Darabont and David Fincher were all previously mentioned to direct.

Robert Towne was previously attached to do a rewrite but dropped out to direct his pet project "Ask the Dust."
