Synopsis

The story of a teenager suffering the disorder anorexia nervosa -- the deliberate starving either by excessive dieting or self-induced vomiting -- in the case of this plot, by her inability to cope with family stress and because of social pressures. Jennifer Jason Leigh, daughter of actor Vic Morrow, replaced the originally scheduled Jody Foster in the lead, with Charles Durning and Eva Marie Saint as her parents. (Performer Karen Carpenter's later death from this disorder put this particular film back in the news subsequently.) An Emmy Award nomination went to the film editor.
